A discussion Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai for her new book Dust Child
Join the Library, Loyalty Bookstores, the Vietnam Society, the Mayor's Office on Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs for a special conversation with celebrated poet and book author Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai to discuss her new book, Dust Child, and her passion for literary exchanges to foster peace and reconciliation. She has authored 11 books, including The Mountains Sing, a powerful, multigenerational fictional tale of the Trần family, set against the backdrops of rarely documented historical events in Vietnam. The Mountains Sing has become an international bestseller, and was runner-up for the 2021 Dayton Literary Peace Prize, winner of the 2020 BookBrowse Best Debut Award, the 2021 International Book Awards, the 2021 PEN Oakland/Josephine Miles Literary Award, and the 2020 Lannan Literary Award Fellowship for Fiction. Quế Mai's writing has been translated into twenty languages and has appeared in major publications including the New York Times. She has a PhD in Creative Writing from Lancaster University. She was named by Forbes Vietnam as one of 20 inspiring women of 2021.
Moderated by Eric Nguyen, author of the novel Things We Lost in the Water and editor in chief of diaCRITICS, an online site that highlights art, literature, and stories from writers, artists, and culture-makers of the Vietnamese and Southeast Asian diaspora.
Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing, and a limited number of free copies will be available courtesy of the DC Public Library Foundaion.
