Long celebrated as a symbol of freedom, the bicycle continues to give riders the ability to explore the outdoors and enjoy the open road. This sense of liberation was especially significant in Washington, D.C., where local bike builders were the first in the nation to design bicycles specifically for women—making D.C. the home of the first women seen riding bicycles in public.
