Dr. Carole Sargent discusses the story of Elizabeth Singer Rowe from the perspective of early America.
In the era of William and Mary, the supernatural writer Elizabeth Singer Rowe was one of the most famous English women. As a teenager and young adult she was known for political poetry. Later she published eerie, supernatural prose and verse that made people think their dead loved ones were speaking from beyond. Come hear Dr. Carole Sargent discuss from the perspective of early America and Georgetown, why she mattered, and why she was written out of history. Was she too emotional? Too political? Or could it be, as some suspect, that the long-unmarried lady had a deeper secret?
