Mary Poppins was written by P.L. Travers and first published in 1934. It tells the tale of mysterious, stern, but magical Mary Poppins who arrives on the east wind just in time to take over as nanny for the Banks family of London. It was followed by a series of books published for over 50 years. It was also most famously adapted into a Disney movie musical of the same name in 1964 starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke.
Mary Poppins the musical premiered in London in 2004 and on Broadway in 2006. It incorporates plots from both the original book and film adaptation, as well as original songs and songs from the film. Music and lyrics were written by the Sherman Brothers, George Stiles, and Anthony Drewe, with the book written by Julian Fellowes. It ran for over 2,600 performances on Broadway, closing in 2013.
