The Human Capital Quarterly Forum features workshops and talks led by local training programs, community-based upskilling initiatives, and industry leaders with real workforce insight.
This event, brought to you by DC Public Library, Levy, and The Upskilling Labs complements the ongoing work of workforce, career-building, and upskilling programs across our region by creating a public forum that connect them to you, the public, all in one place in the center of DC.
Every quarter centers on a theme. This time, it's climate and energy. But the skills, ideas, and best practices that will be shared are relevant far beyond that topic. Most importantly, Human Capital Quarterly is about connection: connecting you with new ideas, new people, and new initiatives. Now more than ever, real human connection is what moves us forward.
The goal is simple: bring together a wider range of contributors to the National Capital Region's workforce to share ideas and to lead practical, hands-on sessions.
The first ever Human Capital Quarterly will feature three dynamic workshops followed by The Upskilling Labs' Upskilling Summit, where you can hear from program participants on concrete, in-demand skills and portfolio projects they've built through their participation in The Upskilling Labs (an open community-driven upskilling organization that you can join at any time) and learn about how you can get started doing the same.

The Upskilling Labs is a fast-growing civic learning community bringing together mission-driven professionals to explore how emerging tech (AI and others) and skill-sharing can unlock new value for our local communities. The Upskilling Labs meetups are opportunities to come together with like-minded people to explore and experiment with emerging technologies like AI.
Meetups are meant to bring anyone interested in upskilling with concrete skills and hands-on projects together around quarterly themes, with each cycle following a structured progression, generally happening on second Tuesdays of the month:
Month 1: Theme Launch & Expert Panel- a panel of experts from government (local, national, international), private sector, academia, and nonprofit organizations presents current challenges within the quarterly theme. The discussion catalyzes ideas about how emerging technologies can address these problems and identifies opportunities for innovation.
Month 2: Workshops & Collaboration- community members meet to collaborate on projects & attend workshops or other help sessions held by volunteer mentors. This affords community members the opportunity to learn from each other and from experts.
Month 3: Progress Showcase- community members voluntarily present their work to date, sharing what they've researched and planned, lessons learned, and next steps. This creates accountability, facilitates knowledge sharing, and builds momentum across the community.
Month 4: Final Project Showcase + New Theme Launch- community members present their final project to an audience, marking the completion of the cycle. Members who complete the cycle will have a concrete example of something they've "built out loud" to add to their professional portfolio, demonstrating real-world skills like adaptability, collaboration, creative problem-solving, and public speaking.
This cycle repeats quarterly with new themes, creating sustained engagement while allowing flexibility for participants to join at any point or contribute to multiple cycles, and work on their projects as long as they would like to. The working themes are as follows: Q1 - Health, Q2 - Climate and Environment, Q3 - Technology and Trust.
