Reclaiming Leadership, Rebuilding Trust
Can someone who dealt drugs while mentoring young athletes reclaim credibility? How does a coach rebuild trust after serving seven years for drug conspiracy? Curtis Malone, founder of DC Assault and author of “Duplicity: Basketball, Drugs, and My Double Life,” addresses these questions directly.
Curtis Malone co-founded DC Assault in 1993 and built it into one of the nation's most successful AAU basketball programs. The organization helped more than 200 young men earn full college scholarships and produced NBA players, including Michael Beasley, Nolan Smith, Jeff Green, and Quinn Cook.
While running DC Assault, Malone was moving heroin and cocaine between Washington, DC, and Los Angeles. In 2013, he was convicted of drug conspiracy and served seven years in federal prison.
In “Duplicity: Basketball, Drugs, and My Double Life,” Malone examines how he justified operating on both sides, the consequences of that, and his return to youth mentorship after his release in 2020.
Malone will sit down with Chris Wright, a DC Assault Alumnus and Washington Wizards broadcaster. Wright played at Georgetown, had a 13-year international career, and became the first known NBA player diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.
