The DC Public Library, the DC Public Library Foundation, and Politics and Prose partner to present a program with author De Nichols about her book, ART OF PROTEST
The DC Public Library is delighted to partner with Politics and Prose and the DC Public Library Foundation for an inspirational program with author De Nichols about her book Art of Protest: Creating, Discovering, and Activating Art for Your Revolution.
Nichols will talk about her new book with DCPL teen employees as moderators.
The first 50 young people to register for the event and select the "Free Event Admission + Free Book" option at registration will receive a complimentary copy of the book for their home library (one book per family, please). Recipients of the complimentary copy will pick their book up in the Alma Thomas Teen Space at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, 901 G St. NW, Washington, DC, beginning Tuesday, April 5. Please note that complimentary book copies must be picked up by Saturday, April 16. These books are generously donated by the District of Columbia Public Library Foundation.
This program is presented in conjunction with D.C. Public Library’s Know Your Power contest, sponsored by Pepco. Teens are invited to submit an original work of writing, photography, illustration, or music that expresses their feelings on a social issue that matters to them. Art has accompanied social justice movements throughout time, bringing attention to important causes and imagining a vision for change. In this brightly colored, art-filled book, Nichols outlines the history of art in social justice movements worldwide, defines key artistic terms, and provides instruction and inspiration for making your own protest art. Nichols also shares her own experiences creating art for the Black Lives Matter movement and considers the future of the arts and social change. Ages 10 and up.
De Nichols mobilizes changemakers to design and develop creative approaches to social, civic, and racial injustices. De currently serves as a Senior Product Inclusion UX Researcher at YouTube and Core Organizer of Design As Protest. She is a 2020 Monument Lab Fellow and 2020 Loeb Fellow of Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design. Art of Protest is her first book.
