A monthly community-based writing series led by Tintas DC that centers Latine, BIPOC, queer, and marginalized voices to explore personal and collective resistance and healing through storytelling
Each session of this series is led by members of Tintas DC and will focus on different themes and forms of expression, culminating in a community showcase. Interested participants are encouraged to attend each workshop, but it is not required. Participants are welcome to speak, write, and share in both English and Spanish. No experience is required to join.
Part 1: “La Primera Raíz / The First Root”: Origin Stories
This workshop invites us to search the past to find parts of ourselves we left behind. Interact with a memory of a moment, a place, or a person, to find some critical part of the self, even with gaps, which may lead to illuminating questions. Origin can mean family, place of birth, your arrival to a particular place, it can point to the essence of who you are—what moment gave rise to the person today? The distance of time allows us to look at our memories with honesty and insight, possibly recognizing aspects of ourselves we couldn’t name before.
We encourage you to bring journal entries, notes, photos, family interviews, objects from your past, or any writing artifact that can help you recall memories and expand your writing.
We’ll work provide to writing prompts to create poems and nonfiction using examples from contemporary writers.
