In celebration of "National Poetry Month" The DC Public Library invites you to compete in the 2025 Haiku Contest this April! This event is open for all ages.
Between April 1-30, write a haiku about one of the following themes:
✎ Dreams,
✎ Library Love
✎ Best Things in Life
✎ Only in DC
✎ Freedom and Diversity Make us Great!
Contest runs April 1-30 in honor of National Poetry Month.
Children’s (6-12), teens (13-19) and adults (20+) winners will be selected. Winners will receive library swag, a certificate, and have their poem on display at the library!
You can submit your entries on-line here or in-person by filling out our haiku contest form!
Limited to 2 entries per person.
What is a Haiku?
Haiku is the shortest form of poetry!
Haiku's are traditional Japanese poems made up of three short lines that capture a moment, image or feeling.
The traditional form has 17 syllables:
Line 1 has 5 syllables.
Line 2 has 7 syllables.
Line 3 has 5 syllables.
Haiku are described as:
a sensory passing experience,
reflecting a moment concisely,
distilling a human experience into a very short poem, or
a moment to reflect, a sense of wonder.
