Join longtime activists and collaborators Dean Spade (Love in a F*cked Up World: How to Build Relationships, Hook Up, and Raise Hell Together) and Jaime M. Grant (Polyamory For Dummies) as they reflect upon the hundreds of conversations they've had on the road this year talking about their books. Let's talk about love, movement conflicts, polyamory, resistance, hooking up, activist resilience, pleasure, and friendship!
How are you dealing with the malaise brought on by intensifying authoritarianism? What are you doing with your sense of exhaustion and isolation? Come enjoy insights, laughter, hip tips for survival and thrival, and community.
Polyamory for Dummies: Polyamory literally means “more love”. Twenty-first century polyamory is the practice of engaging in multiple intimate relationships at the same time, with the full consent of all partners. Polyamory For Dummies gives you the lowdown on this expansive form of consensual non-monogamy, so you can go forth and prosper in whatever ways you choose. This straightforward, research-backed, and nuanced guidebook helps the poly-curious become poly-fluent.
Love in a F*cked-Up World: Lifelong activist and educator Dean Spade dares us to decide that our interpersonal actions are not separate from our politics of liberation and resistance. Many activist projects and resistance groups fall apart because people treat each other poorly, trying desperately to live out the cultural myths about dating and relationships that we are fed from an early age. How do we divest from the idea that one romantic partner will be the solution to all our problems? How do we bring our best thinking about freedom and justice into step with our desires for healing and connection?
Dr. Jaime M. Grant, author of Injustice at Every Turn: A Report of the National Transgender Discrimination Survey, and Great Sex: Mapping Your Desire, is an equity expert, researcher and trainer who has been active in LGBTQ, women’s and racial justice movements since the late 80s. Having survived sexist violence and anti-lesbian disownment as a youth, Dr. Grant became a go-to resource on gender and sex among her peers and colleagues as a matter of survival.
Dean Spade has been working to build queer and trans liberation based in racial and economic justice for the past two decades. He is a professor at the Seattle University School of Law. He is the author of Normal Life: Administrative Violence, Critical Trans Politics and the Limits of Law. Bella Terra Press published a Spanish edition in 2016. In 2015, Dean released a one-hour video documentary, Pinkwashing Exposed: Seattle Fights Back!, which can be watched free online with English captions or subtitles in several languages. Dean’s book, Mutual Aid: Building Solidarity During This Crisis (and the next) was published by Verso Press in October 2020.
