Come hear about the history of American Elms in Mount Pleasant and the residents who helped save them!
The American Elm was planted in cities throughout the US in the 19th and early 20th century because of its beautiful hanging canopy—including in DC. Unfortunately, Dutch Elm Disease caused most of the elms to die out. In Mount Pleasant however, an intrepid group of residents took action and started to steward these beautiful native trees in the 1970s and 1990s, including applying a pioneering anti-fungal treatment that was later adopted by the District and Urban Forestry agencies around the country. Because of their early efforts, we still have some original American Elms standing in the neighborhood. Stewardship efforts by a new generation of residents continue today.
Join Stella Tarnay, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Capital Nature for a slide presentation on the American Elm and its history in Mount Pleasant, and a panel of past and current tree activists who are helping to keep Mount Pleasant's beautiful canopy thriving.
