Faith In Focus Series
Author and scholar Evelyn Underhill (1875-1941) published widely on spirituality and mysticism in the mid 20th century. Born in England, she had experienced divine peace and happiness, and prayed others would feel the same. Using her intellectual genius, she summarized that we know God primarily in one of three ways: as lover, as purity, or as home.
Using these categories, her books ushered in a new way of perceiving faith as an ecumenical unifying and reconciling power in the world. She called this spiritual pilgrimage living the life of The Mystic Way. Her books and talks opened up a new interest in mysticism, even as she broke ground for women.
She was the first woman to speak to groups of Anglican clergy and she led many spiritual retreats and seminars. During Women’s History month, let’s remember this adventurous and spiritual women who became the leader of a movement suggesting that our world needs interior peace and hope from God.
