Our August book, A Princess Bride, is an exploration (and slight skewering) of fantasy tropes, written by William Goldman.
August is meant to be a light-hearted month, and this book, The Princess Bride, is a hopeful reminder of how it feels to be light-hearted. This book club's yearly August read is always fantasy or sci-fi connected; and this book, the source material for the ever-popular movie, feels like it takes advantage of the time of year well.
The premise is simple: The most beautiful girl in the world marries the handsomest prince in the world.
The Princess Bride: S. Morgenstern's Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure, The "Good Parts" Version is a 1973 fantasy romance novel by American writer William Goldman. The book combines elements of comedy, adventure, fantasy, drama, romance, and fairy tale. It is presented as "an abridgment" of a longer work by the fictional S. Morgenstern, and Goldman's "commentary" asides are constant throughout.
