Join us for an inspiring discussion on Chelsea Vowel’s Buffalo Is the New Buffalo!
As we celebrate National Native American Heritage Month, we invite you to delve into the powerful stories of "Metis futurism" that challenge us to envision a world beyond violence, capitalism, and colonization.
"Buffalo Is the New Buffalo" presents powerful narratives of "Métis futurism," envisioning a world free from violence, capitalism, and colonization. The collection draws on the metaphor "Education is the new buffalo," highlighting the importance of education for Indigenous survival, while challenging the notion that ancestral ways are irretrievable. Chelsea Vowel prompts a reimagining of the past and future, asking how to revive these traditions.
The anthology blends classic and contemporary speculative fiction, featuring stories like a Two-Spirit rougarou solving a murder amidst colonial tensions, and a Métis man transformed by a radioactive bison. Themes of healing from colonialism and reclaiming identity emerge through imaginative scenarios, such as Cree-speaking nanites and foxes taking human form. These eight stories expand the understanding of Indigenous existence and resistance, offering a provocative reworking of shared history through a distinctly Métis lens.
