Oct 13: Dracula - The first sound adaptation of Bram Stoker’s seminal novel about Count Dracula, the prototypical vampire from Transylvania, this film would jumpstart a burgeoning horror film industry and be high point in a long-string of Universal monster movies. Bela Lugosi steps into the title role that would define his career and establish a legacy that still stands tall over horror cinema almost 100 years later.
Oct 20: Ring - Also known as Ringu, this film would help popularize the Japanese horror genre internationally and be the first to be remade for Western audiences. The film follows the journalist, Reiko Asakawa, played by Nanako Matsushima, as she investigates a cursed videotape that, when watched, leads to the viewer’s death seven days later. Popularizing a more cerebral version of horror, this film would influence many of the most popular horror films over the last 25 years.
After the film ends, there will be a short, informal discussion of the audience’s reactions and thoughts on the film.
