An event celebrating youth voice and creativity, featuring an open mic of youth writing and a presentation from Amber McBride, author of Me (Moth)
DC Public Library, the DC Public Library Foundation, Politics and Prose, and Pepco are excited to celebrate the creative accomplishments of youth who submitted writing, art, photography, and music to the 3rd annual Know Your Power civic engagement arts contest. At 12 PM on the 5th floor, there will be a performance of youth poetry MCed by artists from Words, Beats, and Life. At 1 PM in the auditorium, there will be an inspiring presentation from Amber McBride, the award-winning author of the young adult novel, Me (Moth). Me (Moth) is a thought-provoking novel written in verse about a young woman who has experienced profound loss. She is lonely and aching until she meets Sani, a boy sifting through his ancestral roots in search of healing. They join forces for a cross-country trip that finds them hunting ghosts, confessing secrets and falling in love. Amber McBride will speak about her book and share her personal experiences honing her craft for youth writers and artists in the audience.
The event will conclude with the announcement of the Know Your Power contest winners.
Audience members present for this event will receive a free copy of Me (Moth), while supplies last. These books are generously donated by Pepco and the District of Columbia Public Library Foundation.
