Read with Northeast Neighborhood Library all year! Every month, we will issue a new reading challenge around a different theme. Complete at least five monthly challenges this year and win a prize!
Black speculative fiction is an umbrella term that encompass science fiction, fantasy, alternate history, and horror genres where people of the African diaspora take part or are depicted. This month, we look forward to reading speculative fiction by Black authors.
Check the Northeast Neighborhood Library for a display of Speculative Fiction books by Black authors.
When you complete a book, drop a slip with your contact info and the book you read in the Challenge Box by the display, or do so digitally by clicking the "Register" button on this page.
For more ideas, check out these lists of Speculative Fiction by Black Authors:
"A Crash Course in the History of Black Science Fiction" - Nisi Shawl, Author
"Imagining Future Histories: Black Speculative Fiction" - University of Iowa Library
"African speculative fiction is finally getting its due. Let’s talk about books to seek out." - The Washington Post
Don't forget, you can always ask a library staff member for a recommendation and/or to help put a book on hold.
