A Black History Month screening honoring Civil Rights leader Pauli Murray
Join us to watch and discuss My Name is Pauli Murray, a documentary directed by Julie Cohen and Betsy West. Roger Ebert says the directors "let their subject narrate an incredible life that influenced students, civil rights leaders and more than one future Supreme Court justice. Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Thurgood Marshall used Murray’s ideas and research in their most famous court cases. The filmmakers draw attention to how prescient and forward thinking those ideas were, pointing out how the ACLU used them as late as 2020 to ensure that LGBTQ+ rights were upheld. If this were a dramatic feature, I’m not sure my suspension of disbelief would be elastic enough to withstand the achievements presented here."
Join Shepherd Park Library's Black Voices Book Club on February 24 at 6:30 pm to discuss writings by and about this civil rights hero. Stop by the library to pick up a copy of Pauli Murray's poetry, memoir, or biography.
