What We Inherit: Writing Beyond Permission

A monthly community-based writing series that centers Latine, BIPOC, queer, and marginalized voices to explore personal and collective resistance and healing through storytelling.

Workshop Description

Through the lens of raíces: the histories, voices, memories, and communities that ground us, we examine what we have inherited: the rules and beliefs that have taught us to shrink or question our right to take up space, as well as the stories, wisdom, and resistance that teach us otherwise. Through writing, we interrogate and complicate these inheritances, reclaim spaces that were not built for us, and imagine what becomes possible when we create from a place of belonging rather than permission.

Workshop Facilitator 

Azalea Aguilar is a Pushcart Prize–nominated Chicana poet originally from South Texas, where the scent of gulf and memories of childhood linger in her work. Her poetry delves into complexities of motherhood, echoes of childhood trauma, and resilience found in spaces shaped by survival. She writes to honor the past, give voice to the unspoken, and carve tenderness from raw edge of experience. She was recently named one of LatinoStories.com’s Top 10 Latine Debut Authors. Her debut chapbook, Foxhole, was published by Bottlecap Press and was featured in the NYU Latinx Project’s La Treintena 2026. Her work has appeared in numerous journals, including The Latino Book Review, The Skinny Poetry Journal, The Acentos Review, Somos en Escrito, and The Mid-Atlantic Review. She is a proud alum of the Macondo Writers Workshop. She is currently crafting her first full-length manuscript, a collection exploring the intersections of love, loss, and lineage.

What to Expect

Each session includes a grounding welcome, a generative free-write, a deep dive into the theme, writing prompts, and time to share with each other in a supportive, welcoming space. Participants are encouraged to speak, write, and share in both English and Spanish, and use the language(s) that feel most true to you.

No experience required. Come as you are, bring a notebook or laptop.
