Learn about the DC Council, how DC's legislative process works, and more.
Join us for our first 'Our City, Our Stories' event: DC Council 101 and learn about our city's legislative branch.
This presentation will provide information on the history of how we ended up with a Council initially, some key Council stats, what Councilmember responsibilities include, how DC’s legislative process works, how the oversight/budget process works, and additional resources residents can rely on. There will be a question and answer period immediately following the presentation.
The presentation will occur in the auditorium and is open to all. Registration is recommended but not required.
Whether you're a lifelong Washingtonian or a new resident, you don't want to miss this program!
This program is part of 'Our City, Our Stories', a program series that features informative programs about local government and governance and educates residents on how they can be involved in the process, while also presenting cultural programs featuring authors, artists, and subject matter experts from Washington, DC.
Josh Gibson is the Director of Communications and Public Information Officer for the Council of the District of Columbia, AKA the DC Council, the city/county/state legislature of the District of Columbia. In that role, he has achieved recognition by communicating in an approachable and nontraditional manner. The headline of a 2018 Washington Post profile declared “the D.C. Council went from dry to wry thanks to this guy,” and a Washington City Paper profile declared him “strong in the ways of the Twitterverse.”
Josh serves as the informal historian for the DC Council, and as informal curator of the John A. Wilson Building, DC's city hall, county seat, and statehouse.
