French Conversations & Culture at Georgetown Library

These classes are designed for French learners at an intermediate to advanced level: students who already have a sound knowledge of French who want to expand their ability and speak with greater ease.

Language: The reason participants walk through the door. French is the starting point, the shared language that brings people together.
People Together: What they discover from the very first session. A welcoming community where people from diverse backgrounds connect, exchange ideas, and learn from one another.
Curiosity: The driving force of the program. Through books, films, artists, history, current affairs, guest speakers, and the richness of the Francophone world, participants are encouraged to explore beyond language itself.
Taking It Further: Our promise. Every week, participants leave with more than new vocabulary. They gain knowledge, confidence, broader perspectives, meaningful connections, and a deeper understanding of the world through the lens of the French language.

PROGRAM FRAMEWORK
The program is designed as an evolving learning journey rather than a fixed curriculum. Its content and themes will continue to develop based on participants' interests, guest speaker opportunities, cultural events, and current affairs. This flexible approach ensures that every session remains relevant, engaging, and intellectually stimulating.

THE CIRCLE EXPERIENCE
Each session follows a consistent structure designed to encourage active participation, build confidence, and develop French language skills through meaningful conversations and cultural discovery.

1. Le Mot de la Semaine 
Each week begins with the discovery of a French word or expression that reflects the richness of the French language and culture. Participants are encouraged to incorporate the Word of the Week naturally into the discussions throughout the session.

2. French Spotlight 
Three participants deliver a short prepared presentation (1–2 minutes) on a cultural topic assigned the previous week. Topics may include a place, an artist, a book, a film, a historical figure, a tradition, or another aspect of the Francophone world. Each presentation is followed by questions from the group, encouraging spontaneous interaction and authentic conversation.

3. Guided Conversation 
Building on the participants' presentations, the facilitator leads an interactive discussion around a broader theme. Through open-ended questions, pair activities, and group exchanges, participants practice expressing opinions, asking questions, sharing experiences, and responding naturally in French. Rather than focusing on grammar instruction, language development takes place through authentic communication. Throughout the session, the facilitator provides gentle corrections, pronunciation guidance, vocabulary enrichment, and practical language tips, ensuring that every participant continues to improve while speaking with confidence.

4. Closing Circle & Next Challenge
The session concludes with a brief group reflection, allowing each participant to share one takeaway, a new expression they learned, or something they found particularly interesting. The next French Spotlight topic is then introduced, inviting participants to prepare a short presentation for the following week.
