DIY Night & Open House

at The People's Archive

Join us in The People's Archive for a night of DIY and punk.

The Punk Archive will be hosting a DIY night in the People's Archive. Bring your creative, punk spirit! We'll be making buttons, zines, and screen printing with Nando Álvarez! 

After you make your way through all DIY activities in room 401C, come into The People's Archive. At 7pm enjoy a lightning talk by Thomas Venker, Editor-in-Chief of Kaput Magazine. Venker will be discussing the DMV's international punk legacy. We are also hosting an open house which includes showing unique footage from DC punk shows at the old 9:30 Club location. 

This event has been generously sponsored and held in partnership with the Goethe-Institut for 50 years of punk. The Goethe-Institut is the Federal Republic of Germany’s cultural institute, active worldwide. They promote the study of German abroad and encourage international cultural exchange.

Registration is encouraged but not mandatory.

About Nando Álvarez

Nando Álvarez is an Ecuadorian artist based in Washington, D.C., whose practice is rooted in collaboration with local communities and artist collectives. His work explores the intersections of social justice, cultural identity, and migration, reflecting on how his Ecuadorian roots inform his present cultural landscape in the United States.At the heart of his practice is an exploration of human connection, an ongoing dialogue between the individual and the universal experience of being human. Álvarez is especially drawn to how crisis can reveal the deeper layers of our shared humanity, engaging themes of migration, identity, and transformation. His work holds space for complexity, vulnerability, and resilience within these experiences.

About Thomas Venker

Thomas Venker lives and works in Cologne, Germany.He is co-publisher and co-editor-in-chief of Kaput – Magazine for Bankruptcy & Pop, and co-curator of the concert series “Köln ist kaput” and “Talking Kaput.” In recent years, Kaput has received numerous accolades, including the Rocco Clein Award for Best Music Magazine (2015), the VUT Award for Best Experiment (2016), and three Anchor Awards, the music journalism prize presented by Hamburg’s Reeperbahn Festival, for articles by its contributors in 2018, 2019, and 2020.Before founding Kaput in 2014, Venker served for 14 years as editor-in-chief of Intro Magazine, at the time Germany’s highest-circulation music magazine, with a print run of 150,000 copies. In 2008, Intro received the Grimme Online Award for its groundbreaking digital presence.

Venker regularly contributes to a wide range of magazines and daily newspapers, moderates panels and symposia for cultural institutions, runs the art vinyl label Edition Fieber, and is part of the curatorial team of the Monheim Triennale.Most recently, his book Talking to Americans was published by Ventil Verlag in Mainz.
