Explore the bridge between the comic book and the controller with two writers whose craft has taken them from comics to video games.
You play Spider-Man: Miles Morales on PS5. Evan Narcisse helped build the story. You watched Black Panther. He co-wrote Rise of the Black Panther for Marvel with Ta-Nehisi Coates. He's writing Batman/Static: Beyond right now.
Stephanie Williams writes Nubia, the Black Wonder Woman, for DC. She built the book so Nubia leads the Amazons on her own, not as Diana's sister. She's also writing the new Street Sharks comic and her own creator-owned horror book, Roots of Madness.
Two writers who move between comics and video games. Ask them how the writing changes when you're writing for a controller instead of a page.
If you fill notebooks with characters nobody else has seen, this is for you. If you've been watching the movies and you want to find the comics they came from, this is for you. If you already post your own work online and you want to talk to people who do this for a living, this is for you.
COMICTROPOLIS is a series of conversations at DC Public Library locations featuring David Betancourt (The Athletic/New York Times), a former culture reporter at The Washington Post and writer for Marvel Entertainment and various guest stars from the comic book industry.
This series will be aimed at Washington’s vibrant comic book reading community and led by a native Washingtonian (Betancourt) who still lives in DC and grew up frequenting Big Planet Comics (DC’s DMV chain of comic bookstores) in Georgetown and on U Street NW. Betancourt remains an avid fan and believer in the power of comic books and their impact on society.
The series will be an insider look into the world of writing comics from both Betancourt and guests and what it is like for all the creatives featured to work with some of the most popular brands in pop culture. They will also discuss what it means to go from the worlds of Marvel and DC Comics to creating their own creator-owned comic book brands.
