Presented in collaboration with the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution and National Portrait Gallery
Drawing on collections in NPG and Archives of American Art, especially lesbian and disability activism, this panel features renowned artists reflecting on the relationship between capturing images and recording voices. This artist-driven panel will include portraits at the National Portrait Gallery and oral histories and materials from the Archives to reflect on portraiture’s power to effect change for individuals and communities. Panelists include DC-based photographers Joan E. Biren and Leigh Mosley, New York-based photographer Lola Flash, and Chicago-based portrait painter Riva Lehrer. It will be moderated by Ben Gilliespie, Head of Curatorial Affairs, Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution.
This screening and conversation is held in conjunction with the exhibition D.I.Y. in the District: Celebrating D.C.'s Artist-Run Spaces, on view through December 7 at the MLK Library. Visit the exhibit website for a full schedule of artist-driven programs during October and November.
