On Feb. 19, we will be celebrating the 4th Anniversary of the Go-Go Music Designation Act at The Howard Theatre, the home of Go-Go since the 1970s.
Mayor Muriel Bowser signed the Go-Go Music of the District of Columbia Designation Act of 2019 to make Go-Go the official music of Washington, D.C. The legislation, introduced by Ward 5 Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie and unanimously passed by the Council, calls for the implementation of a program to support and archive Go-Go music and its history in the District. Go-Go originated in the District during the mid-1960s to late 1970s and is a fusion of many different musical forms, including funk, blues, soul, and salsa.
The Go-Go Archive, which is a core piece of The People's Archive at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library captures both well-documented and lesser-known stories from groups like organizations, record labels, houses, venues, festivals, record shops, radio stations and artists. Currently, the Library has more than 20 linear feet of materials in various formats including photographs, books, magazines, records, cassettes, CDs, DVDs and video.
Come join hosts De De Folarin and Kapri as they welcome EU, Junkyard Band, Backyard Band and R&S Band to the stage with beats by DJ Frank White.
