Read and discuss the books that inspired Broadway musicals, enriching understanding and enjoyment of both!
This month, we will be reading and discussing Anne Rice's 1976 classic, Interview with the Vampire along with the 2005 Broadway adaption of the book, Lestat.
Interview with the Vampire chronicles the tale of Louis de Pointe du Lac, turned into a vampire in 1791, as he tells it to an intrigued reporter. From his mortal days outside 18th century French New Orleans, to his transformation by his maker Lestat who he abhors and needs, and the family they create by turning the child Claudia into a vampire, Louis' story explores fears of mortality and the misery of immortality, and how both mortals and immortals both struggle with monsters and demons within. It is highly regarded for deploying the vampire as a sympathetic protagonist and transforming and shifting uses of monster characters in literature to ones readers can identify with. The book turned Rice into a superstar author, launched her prolific career, and become the first book in a popular Vampire Chronicles series. It was most famously adapted into a successful 1994 film starting Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Antonio Banderas, Christian Slater, and Kirsten Dunst. It has also been adapted into a TV first airing in 2022 and now in its second season.
Lestat is one of the lesser well known adaptations of the book. After a successful pre-Broadway run in San Francisco in 2005 before moving to New York in 2006, Lestat closed after just two months and never former released cast recording. Its plot pulls both from Interview with the Vampire and its sequel The Vampire Lestat, contextualizing Louis' take on vampire life from the perspective of his maker Lestat, who has a quite the different experience as a vampire and became the central figure of the ongoing Vampire Chronicles. . The The score is by Elton John and Bernie Taupin, with the book by Linda Woolverton.
