Read and discuss the books that inspired Broadway musicals, enriching understanding and enjoyment of both!
Don Quixote was written by Miguel de Cervantes and first published in 1605. It is often considered the first modern novel and one of greatest novels ever written. The plot follows hidalgo Alonso Quijano, who is so enrapt with chivalric romances that deludes himself into becoming a knight-errant from the stories and inspire people throughout Spain. He renames himself "Don Quixote de la Mancha" and along with his renamed horse, "Rocinante," and a farmhand turned reluctant squire Sancho, goes on adventures attributing fantastical and chivalric meanings to the mundane circumstances encountered.
Man of La Mancha is a 1965 musical loosely based on Don Quixote with book by Dale Wasserman, music by Mitch Leigh, and lyrics by Joe Darion. It is written as a play within play, with Cervantes and other prisoners awaiting trial of the Inquisition act out stories of the "mad knight" Don Quixote. The original Broadway production ran over 2,300 performances and won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical. It has been revived on Broadway four times and has had productions across the world and in many languages.
