Read and discuss the books that inspired Broadway musicals, enriching understanding and enjoyment of both!
This month we will take it a little easier and be reading the play, "Oedipus at Colonus," the second (chronologically) of three plays in Sophocles' Theban cycle. Feel free to read the other two plays ("Oedipus Rex" and "Antigone"). "Oedipus at Colonus" follows the disgraced King of Thebes to the village of Colonus where the tragedy of his family continues and he is laid to rest.
The play was adapted into a gospel musical in 1983 called "Gospel at Colonus" by experimental theatre Lee Breuer. It was noted for its casting gospel choirs as the play's chorus and the Blind Boys of Alabama to collectively play the role of Oedipus. It was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Drama and had a brief run on Broadway in 1988. The musical was recently restaged in New York's Central Park in 2018 with much of the original cast.
