Join us for the inaugural meeting of the West End Virtual Film Club!
Introducing a new biweekly discussion group in which we will examine two films during each meeting. Every one of the films we discuss will be available to view for free on the Kanopy streaming service (www.kanopy.com), accessible through your DC Public Library card. The aim of the group is to engage with a deep and diverse pool of film history—we will examine films both classic and contemporary, from a variety of artistic movements and regions.
On February 24th, we will be discussing two films from the highly influential New Taiwanese Cinema movement: Edward Yang’s Terrorizers and Tsai Ming-liang's Rebels of the Neon God. Both films explore urban anomie in the city of Taipei and remain as vividly contemporary as they were on their first release. Terrorizers is a complex, puzzle-like narrative exploring the intersection of various people who are isolated by their urban environment and internal discord. Rebels of the Neon God is Tsai Ming-liang's confident feature film debut, the starting point for his increasingly minimalistic style and committed collaboration with actor Lee Kang-sheng.
