This panel conversation will explore what UDC Professor Amanda Huron's DC Tenant and Community Organizer Oral History project can teach us about present-day struggles for economic and social justice.
In 2019, Amanda Huron, Associate Professor of Political Science and Interdisciplinary Social Sciences at the University of the District of Columbia, started an oral history project aimed at collecting stories from DC residents who were involved in tenant organizing and housing activism in the 1970s. She recorded incredibly rich life stories from 13 narrators who had been involved in early attempts to secure affordable housing for their communities during early waves of gentrification and redevelopment. The stories illustrate how one’s early life experiences can influence a person’s later passions, goals, and careers. They show how activists were, on the one hand a tight-knit community of frequent collaborators, but on the other, a diverse group of people from various backgrounds. For the first Coffee Chat of 2022, Dr. Huron will be joined by several of the project’s narrators, as well as at least one current community organizer for a panel conversation exploring what these oral histories can teach us about present-day struggles for economic and social justice.
