Join us at the Benning/Dorothy I. Height Neighborhood Library for a Juneteenth Scavenger Hunt celebrating freedom, resilience, culture, and Black history.
Also known as Emancipation Day or Freedom Day, Juneteenth recognizes that on June 19, 1865, a Union general arrived in Galveston, Texas, with the news that the Civil War had ended and that all enslaved African Americans were to be set free. The following year, the people of Galveston held a celebration to mark the occasion, filled with food, music, ceremony, and communion. That spirit of remembrance and community continues today.
