Join us for the launch of the exhibit Barry Farm: Uplifting a Living History, Ensuring a Just Future at the Anacostia Neighborhood Library!
At the event, the DC Legacy Project will premiere a brand new Barry Farm short film and prepare for next month's UNIFEST activities. They will start with welcoming remarks and the film and we will close in community by making lanterns for the October 16th Lantern Walk in Anacostia.
About the Exhibit: Barry Farm: Uplifting a Living History
This traveling panel exhibit, organized by Empower DC and the DC Legacy Project, invites visitors to learn about the history of the historic Barry Farm community and a shared vision for the future site – from the founding of this self-sufficient Black community in 1867 through present-day efforts to preserve the history of the site and restore affordable housing for residents.
The exhibit is on view on the first floor of the library.
This is the first of three library locations to host the exhibit this fall. Following the Anacostia Neighborhood Library, the exhibit will travel to Bellevue Neighborhood Library (January 2026) and the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library (March 2026).
Empower DC’s DC Legacy Project preserves community history, including historical sites, to continue the living legacy of the Black-led struggle for land, housing and justice. Currently, the DC Legacy Project is committed to restoring the historically landmarked buildings at Barry Farm, which we won historic protection for in 2020, the last remaining structures at this public housing site that has been cleared for redevelopment. With a sizable advisory team of historians, preservationists, architects and former residents, we are building support to create a community cultural center at the site dedicated to commemorating history, community development and community organizing.
