The Best Man characters are back—and they’re not done yet.
Pulitzer prizes, past relationships, and unshakable friendships collide in The Best Man: Unfinished Business, a bold new novel from acclaimed filmmaker Malcolm D. Lee and bestselling author Jayne Allen.
Set years after The Best Man: The Final Chapters, this debut book in a new trilogy picks up where the story left off—bringing Harper, Jordan and Robyn back into the fold as they grapple with creative blocks, emotional reckonings, and the unfinished business of love.
At this event, Lee and Allen explore how longtime fans are finally getting what the screen couldn’t show: the interior lives of the characters. Expect sharp insights and a candid conversation about expanding cultural legacies in new mediums, including:
Malcolm D. Lee is the director behind “The Best Man,” “Girls Trip,” and “The Best Man: The Final Chapters.” Unfinished Business marks his literary debut. Jayne Allen is the author of the “Black Girls Must Die Exhausted” trilogy and a producer and creative force in modern Black storytelling.
This event offers a chance to examine how beloved cultural characters evolve—and what they reveal when we follow them off-screen.

Malcolm D. Lee is a writer, director, and producer whose directorial work includes his critically acclaimed feature film debut, The Best Man, as well as Girls Trip, Night School, and The Best Man: The Final Chapters. His company, Blackmaled Productions, is dedicated to telling diverse stories that contribute to changing and amplifying narratives of people of color.
Jayne Allen is the author of the bestselling Black Girls Must Die Exhausted novel series and The Most Wonderful Time. Allen crafts transcultural stories that touch upon contemporary women’s issues.
