Join to celebrate the closing of the Radio CPR exhibit, on view on the 4th floor of the MLK Library!
Reunite or join with organizers and radio programmers from Radio CPR to celebrate community histories, music, and more! We are commemorating twenty-five (now twenty-seven!) years after the founding of the incredible community-organizing effort that was Radio CPR—a deeply grass-rooted radio station which began on Mt. Pleasant Street in Northwest D.C. The all-volunteer radio station broadcast a low-power FM signal that reached Mt. Pleasant and nearby neighborhoods from 1998-2017, offering a wide variety of music and public affairs programming on weeknights and weekends. Radio CPR brought together different communities, uplifted diverse voices, and contributed to the musical ecology of D.C. off-air through live music shows, dj nights, and helping end the limits on live music performance at restaurants in the neighborhood.Learn about navigating the joys and challenges of community organizing through the airwaves and on the block.
We will celebrate the final month of a special community-curated case of archival materials from the Radio CPR collection in The People's Archive, on view in the Library's fourth floor exhibit Up from the People: Protest and Change in D.C., on view through June 11, 2025. At the event, you can hear sounds curated by Radio CPR's DJ in the fourth floor exhibit space, gather for light refreshments, and share stories.
*Note: the event is happening on the 4th floor of the MLK Library, near the exhibit where the Radio CPR materials are featured; refreshments will be served in the conference room 401-D.
This program is for all-ages. RSVP is recommended but not required. For more information, email MLKexhibits@dc.gov.
