Read and discuss the books that inspired Broadway musicals, enriching understanding and enjoyment of both!
The Day the World Came to Town recounts the experience of the town of Gander, Newfoundland during and in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks as dozens of planes were diverted to land at Gander International Airport. Author Jim DeFede moved to Gander to research the big changes having to happen in a small town while much of the world was experiencing a sense of chaos.
Come From Away took its inspiration from the book as well as direct interviews with locals and landed passengers on the tenth anniversary of 9/11. It explores the perspectives of the day of locals trying to support frightened passengers and crew as they try to contact loved ones and plan to get home. Its music, lyrics, and book were by Irene Sankoff and David Hein. It opened on Broadway in March 2017, notching nearly 1700 performances in its over five year run. The musical was nominated for seven Tony Awards, winning one for Best Direction of a Musical.
