Read and discuss the books that inspired Broadway musicals, enriching understanding and enjoyment of both!
Gaston Leroux's The Phantom of the Opera began as a serial publication in 1909 and then first published as a complete volume in 1910. It tells of a masked polymath who lives under the Paris Opera who sets to advance the career of a young soprano while terrorizing the rest of the company of the opera house.
Andrew Lloyd Weber's The Phantom of the Opera is the longest running musical in Broadway history and one of the world's most iconic. It first premiered in London in 1986 and had its Broadway premier in 1988. It was several Tony Awards, including best musical. It was also adapted into a 2004 film of the same name.
Join the Page to Stage Book Club in the Lower Level Conference Room of the Northeast Neighborhood Library to read the original serialized The Phantom of the Opera novel by Gaston Leroux and discuss how it has influenced not only the hit musical, but other books, films, and shows in the over century since its original printings.
