Come experience the history and rise of murals East of the River with DC Murals.
Cory Lee Stowers, Executive Director of DC Murals, will give a lecture and presentation on the history of murals East of the River, featuring murals surrounding the Dorothy I. Height/Benning Library. To the East: The Rise of Public Murals East of the River chronicles the call for a distinct Black American identity in the visual arts and the origins of the public mural movement in the United States. Cory Lee Stowers is an award-winning cultural anthropologist, visual artist, and author based in Washington, DC. His wide-ranging expertise encompasses fields such as education, music, film, and scholarly writing. He is known for his artistic contributions as a celebrated muralist, graffiti artist, graphic designer, and curator, having worked on numerous regional public art projects.
Stowers is also a co-founder of the Double Down Kings, the largest graffiti crew in the D.C. area, known for their innovative style and commitment to pushing the boundaries of public art. Through this work with the crew, Stowers has had the opportunity to collaborate with many talented artists and create some of the city's most iconic murals and street productions.
Apart from his artistic pursuits, Stowers also founded ART B.L.O.C. DC (Art Building Longevity in Our Community), an art consultancy focused on providing design and marketing solutions to its clients, including interactive public mural installations that employ technology to communicate identity and values.
Since 2021, Stowers has been serving as the executive director of DC Murals, a non-profit organization dedicated to documenting and archiving the city's murals. He has curated exhibits, including the 14th Street Graffiti Museum and Aerosoul--Murals for Our Time, and To the East--The Rise of Public Murals.
