Join Politics and Prose and DC Public Libraries for a Banned Books Week event featuring David Levithan and Amy Sarig King. They will discuss their new books that take on the issue of censorship.

In David Levithan’s novel, Answers in the Pages, Donovan leaves the new book he's reading in class on the kitchen counter. When his mother reads it, she fears that the two main characters are gay and begins work to get it removed from the school curriculum. Soon the entire community is talking about the book, and if it’s an appropriate choice for kids. Answers in the Pages presents a compelling story about censorship, finding your voice, and who gets to decide what and how children learn.

Curiosity and a bit of detective work begin when Mac and his classmates encounter the Attack of the Black Rectangles (forthcoming) by Amy Sarig King. They are excited as they first start reading in literature circles. But when they open their new books and discover words in all of the books have been systematically blacked out with permanent marker, they want to find out why. Once they read the unmarked book, they work to thwart the Attack of the Black Rectangles. Together, Mac and his friends collaborate to gain access to books -- without black rectangles -- as they learn and grow.

When not writing during spare hours on weekends, David Levithan is publisher and editorial director at Scholastic, and the founding editor of the PUSH imprint, which is devoted to finding new voices and new authors in teen literature. He has written many books, including Every Day, Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, Dash & Lily’s Book of Dares and the adult novel The Lover’s Dictionary

Amy Sarig King is the author of the middle grade novels The Year We Fell from Space and Me and Marvin Gardens. She also writes young adult novels as A.S. King and is known for Switch and Dig, a 2020 Michael L. Printz Award winner and LA Times Book Prize finalist, Still Life with Tornado, and Ask the Passengers, the 2012 Los Angeles Times Book Prize winner. She is a faculty member of the Writing for Children and Young Adults MFA program at Vermont College of Fine Arts. Amy currently lives in Pennsylvania.

The discussion will be followed by a book sale and author signing.
