A dance performance for Pride with the Dana Tai Soon Burgess Dance Company
Join the Library and the Dana Tai Soon Burgess Dance Company for a special performance to celebrate Pride Month.
Charlie Chan and the Mystery of Love (2010) is a full-company dance work inspired by choreographer Dana Tai Soon Burgess’s coming-of-age story as a young gay Korean American growing up in Santa Fe, New Mexico in the early 1980s. Blending personal narrative with movement, the piece explores themes of belonging, love, and identity within the complexity of modern, multicultural America. Through dynamic ensemble choreography, the work explores themes of belonging, love and identity in modern day, multi-faceted America.
This free event includes a 30-minute performance followed by a 30-minute audience discussion and Q&A with Burgess, offering an opportunity to engage more deeply with the themes of the work and the creative process behind it. Following the discussion, Burgess will hold a book signing of his memoir, Chino and the Dance of the Butterfly.
