This month, we are ambitiously starting with a "classic" novel for the new year. We'll be reading The Unvanquished by William Faulkner.
In this book, Faulkner pulled together "episodes" he'd written for The Saturday Evening Post between 1934-1936. When he decided to have them all published in one text, he wrote one additional episode and that is now what exists as a record of this material.
The Unvanquished follows the Southern Sartoris family during the United States Civil War and into Reconstruction. A closely observed take on this seminal time in American history, this book is an interesting way to explore what it was to be alive and writing about the time period as recent history. Because the book is split into episodes, if you've never before read William Faulkner's writing, this might be a great way to introduce yourself to his work.
We hope you'll join us to discuss the book if you're available; books are available for pick-up upon request to third-floor MLK staff within a month of the program date.
