Floor 4: Up from the People: Protest and Change in D.C., is the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library’s permanent exhibit. It was installed as a part of the modernization of the Library, to honor Dr. King’s message and his connection to local activism. This permanent exhibit will serve as a portal to the Library’s resources, especially The People’s Archive, and a laboratory for engagement with Washington, D.C.’s past, present, and future. It features two main galleries:
A Revolution of Values, in the West Gallery, provides a fresh look at the issues that moved local activists and Martin Luther King Jr. to take action for justice.
D.C. Represented, in the East Gallery, highlights local politics and history through displays on D.C. Mayor-For-Life Marion Barry, D.C. home rule, and the cultural impact of go-go and punk music.
Tours of the permanent exhibit are held every Tuesday, 12pm, beginning April 19. Sign up for a tour.

Floor 5: Invisible Words, on view March 13-June 30, 2022, features a curated collection of signs made by people experiencing homelessness worldwide. Invisible Words is brought to Washington, D.C., through the Ignatian Volunteer Corps (IVC) and the Eleven Eleven Foundation. IVC is a national lay Catholic organization that harnesses the expertise of individuals over fifty who have the passion and commitment to make a difference in issues impacting the world. IVC members serve among the materially poor in twenty regions across the US, reverently entering the lived experience of others while providing their skills to over three hundred social service organizations. By co-sponsoring Invisible Words, IVC seeks to offer a broader audience the opportunity to increase awareness and compassion for people facing homelessness and dire poverty.
