This month, we are reading Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic by Alison Bechdel, an autobiographical graphic novel about the author's early family life running their family funeral home business, relationship with her father, and their sexualities that they could barely discuss with each other. It is a both humorous and wrenching window into Bechdel's process of making sense of her family history.
Alison Bechdel is a famed lesbian graphic novelist and cartoonist, widely known for her long lasting comic strip, "Dykes to Watch Out For." A widely used measure of representation of women in fiction and film in the particular, the "Bechdel Test," is named after her, as an early iteration of the test was discussed by characters in her comic in 1985.
Fun Home was adapted into a musical of the same name Off-Broadway in 2013 and brought to Broadway in 2015, with music by Jeanine Tesori and Book/Lyrics by Lisa Kron. It is the first Broadway musical with a lesbian protagonist to win a Tony Award for Best Musical. It also won for Best Book of a Musical, and Best Original Score.
Copies of Fun Home will be available at the Northeast Library, or you can place a hold yourself from the catalog.
