Join us for an opening reception to celebrate the exhibition Diasporacity on view on the fifth floor of the MLK Library through September 27.
Curated by Laila Abdul-Hadi Jadallah, the exhibition Diasporacity highlights and celebrates the impact of migrant communities on shaping the rich cultural landscape of the nation’s capital and the United States as a whole.
Featuring new and recent work of five D.C.-based artists with diasporic roots – Andrea Limauro, Helen Zughaib, Julia Chon, Mas Paz, and Meron Engida Hawke – visitors are invited to reflect on the story of America “the melting pot” and its proposed belief systems. Highly graphic figurative and lush landscape paintings illustrate the contributions of Americans with diasporic roots, the power of cross-cultural solidarity and how artists stay connected and reflect on their places of origin. Ultimately, Diasporacity provides a microcosm of how diverse communities have shaped the city’s and country’s identity.
To learn more, please visit the exhibit website.
Light refreshments will be served. Registration is recommended.
This exhibit was selected as part of the DC Public Library Open Call for exhibits, inviting proposals that reflect on America's 250th Anniversary throughout 2026. To learn about submitting your own proposal for group exhibitions in 2027 and beyond, please visit dclibrary.org/exhibits.
