Introducing, Celebrating, and Recreating the Poetry and Folklore of Sterling A. Brown
Before there was rap, there was “The Big Boy” Folkloric Poetry of Sterling A. Brown. Before there was a Black Power Movement, there was the race conscious and empowering “Strong Men.” Before Netflix’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Sterling A. Brown’s blues poem had already captured the singer’s musical genius and popularity.
Poet. Critic. Howard University Professor for 40 years. DC’s First Poet Laureate. Sterling A. Brown’s preeminence is unchallenged. He remains a major influence in American Literature.
Young poets are invited to join Kenneth Carroll, III (KC3) on an inspiring journey through the poetry & folklore of literary legend Sterling A. Brown. Explore the roots of a tradition that paved the way for rap while crafting your own folkloric poetry.
Carroll is The Sterling A. Brown Teaching Artist In Residence 2025 at Esther Productions Inc. and DC 2017 Youth Poet Laureate, Carroll also received the Thomas Lux Scholarship from Sarah Lawrence. His work has been featured in Georgia Review, Poitrinal, Lamplack, and Poetry London, among others. He is a Watering Hole, Breadloaf, and Obsidian fellow. Carroll is one of the most popular and talented workshop leaders in the DMV.
