A generative poetry workshop inspired by the life and works of Langston Hughes with Regie Cabico, Kanikki Jakarta, and Dwayne Lawson-Brown
Join the Library and Story Tapestries for 3 poetry workshops inspired by the life and works of Langston Hughes. We will write together and share our poetry in a nurturing environment. This event is for all ages and poets of all levels and is free with registration. Select participants will have their poems published in a digital format for Langston Hughes' birthday, February 1, 2026, highlighting DC's diversity and resilience.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS:
Regie Cabico is the first Asian American Slam Poet to win the Nuyorican Poet Cafe's Grand Slam and has appeared on two seasons of The Poet Speaks, HBO's Def Poetry Jam, and TEDx Talk. He is a lead teaching artist for The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. His latest poetry collection is A Rabbit In Search of a Rolex, published by Day Eight.
Dwayne Lawson-Brown, aka the Crochet Kingpin, is an author, arts administrator for the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, and a Helen Hayes-nominated playwright, competitive karaoke champion, host of Thursday night karaoke at Voodoo Bar DC, and CEO of Crochet Kingpin Designs. Dwayne has performed and hosted at The Kennedy Center, Woolly Mammoth Theater, Keegan Theater, The Strathmore, the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, and Spit Dat DC.
KaNikki Jakarta is the First Black Poet Laureate of Alexandria, Virginia, the author of three novels, two poetry collections, a memoir, a short story, and a poetry collection entitled ALABAMA GIRL, VIRGINIA WOMAN. She has been featured on NBC, WUSA9, and Comcast and is the Inaugural Poet In Residence for Northern Virginia Fine Arts Association. She can be found on the social media platform @kanikkiJ
