matteline devries-dilling of Lite Brite Neon Studio will be talking about their process for fabricating light strings for Felix Gonzalez-Torres's artwork, "Untitled" (America).
In this Maker Talk, matteline deVries-dilling of Lite Brite Neon Studio will be talking about their process for fabricating light strings for Felix Gonzalez-Torres's artwork, "Untitled" (America), currently on display at the MLK Library in conjunction with a major exhibition presented by the National Portrait Gallery and Archives of American Art. In their talk, matteline will go into both the technical aspects of fabricating light-based artworks, including “Untitled” (America)— and how Felix Gonzalez-Torres's work has influenced the studio’s collaboration with artists. Originally from the DMV, matteline got their start in light art fabrication in D.C., working with Craig Kraft, an instructor from the Smithsonian Institution.
Whether you know a lot or a little about fine art fabrication, this Maker Talk is an opportunity to get an inside look at how many artists produce complex or technically difficult designs that go beyond the capabilities of an individual artist's studio.
Artist Felix Gonzalez-Torres created “Untitled” (America) (1994), comprised of twelve light strings that are shown in different configurations across locations inside and outside the museum, including the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library. The installation of this artwork is presented in partnership with the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery and Archives of American Art, as part of the exhibition Felix Gonzalez-Torres: Always to Return, on view from October 18, 2024 through July 6, 2025. Other sites include the Donald W. Reynolds Center for American Art and Portraiture, including the facade of the Old Patent Office Building; and outdoors along 8th Street between D and F streets NW in partnership with the DowntownDC BID.

DC Public Library Maker Talks are 45-minute lectures where we have a (usually local) creator talk about their art or craft and their creative process. Maker Talks are an exciting way to learn something new, dive into an artist's particular process, and meet local creators as well as other community members who appreciate the arts.
