Learn about the history and impact of Black queer publications in Washington, DC.
Over the years, a number of gathering spaces and events have helped to define Washington, DC as an important cultural center for Black queer life. The stories of these spaces are often interconnected with locally-founded Black queer publications. Such publications have and continue to serve as a record of the gatherings, the concerns, and the ideas of DC’s Black queer communities. This panel will explore the histories of some of these publications and their impact.

This program is presented in partnership with STABLE Arts as they present the first Washington, D.C. presentation of Sadie Barnette's The New Eagle Creek Saloon from May 27-July 8, 2023!
Described by Barnette as, “...an installation, and a vibe, that reimagines my father’s bar — the first Black-owned gay bar in San Francisco. Glowing somewhere between amonument and an altar, the glittering bar structure is not only a place but is at once an invocation and an invitation.”
This Washington, D.C. presentation will draw local relevance with robust programming including weekly happy hours, conversations, film screenings, live music, and wellness activations.
