This series of activities aims to introduce audiences to fabric printing, dyeing and surface design techniques.
Trisha Gupta is an Indian Woodblock artist and surface designer who has been working with textiles for the last ten years. She has taught textile workshops in many states, including traditional block printing for the Smithsonian and the GW textile museum. She has a BFA in printmaking and is working on a Masters at MICA.
In these five sessions, you will learn about the following:
1. Shibori - focus on the Japanese art of dying scarves using wood blocks. Both shape shibori and stitched shibori will be demonstrated.
2. Block Printing - learn about the steps, process, and the design motifs in Indian woodblocks. Participants will be guided in creating a printed handkerchief using traditional blocks.
3. Stenciling - learn about stenciling and contemporary surface design. You will learn to create repeat patterns, to layer colors and create varied compositions. You will also learn to make stamps from recycled objects and print in innovative ways.
4. Fabric painting - is a a traditional technique used in many different cultures. It creates a multitude of designs. You will learn to focus on motifs, techniques, and different types of dyes used in traditional and modern surface design.
5. Embroidery - This session will look into sashiko patchwork and will learn new stiches. Emphasis will be on creating geometci patchwork pieces that use hand applique.
