In conjunction with the opening day of the exhibit D.I.Y. in the District, join us for an informal drop-in session at The People's Archive and browse resources related to the local art scene.

Join us for an opportunity to browse items from The People's Archive related to the local art scene and learn about resources available at DC Public Library as well as other libraries, archives, and organizations in our area.

At the event, you can browse items from some of the collections in The People's Archive featured in the new exhibit D.I.Y. in the District. Check out examples from the records of Black Artists of DC Records, DC Arts Center, Rhizome DC, Washington Women's Art Center Records, and more. Connect with epresentatives from other area libraries, archives, and organizations, get inspiration for your next research or preservation project.

This is part 1 of a day of events celebrating the opening of D.I.Y. in the District: Celebrating D.C.'s Artist-Run Spaces.

Note: This event takes place in The People's Archive, on the Fourth Floor of the MLK Library (east side). 

Art + Archives Day Continues with these events October 4 at the MLK Library. 

  • Part 2: Social X Change: Archiving Us Workshop: Interested in starting your own Local Artist File at The People's Archive? Reserve a spot for the in-person 2 p.m. workshop immediately following the Drop-In Session to learn more. Note: this is the second part of a two-part series; the first workshop will be held virtually. You can attend one or both parts of the series. Learn more and register here.
  • Part 3: D.I.Y. Arts Venues in Downtown D.C.: Personal Perspectives: Join us for a visual and sonic tour of the downtown art scene in D.C. from the late 1970s through the early 1990s. The event will feature audio clips and photos from the archives, with reflections from artists who played key roles: Bill Warrell, artist and founder of d.c. space and District Curators, Inc.; Bob Boilen, musician and radio personality; and Cynthia Connolly, artist, curator, and d.c. space program manager (mid 1987- 1991). Audience members will be invited to listen to clips from the D.C. Art Spaces Oral History Project, and share their own memories. Learn more and register here.
